They do pilot them on descent. They’re mostly along to do other things, though. And also to save the day when SHTF.

I’m trying to think of stuff that fits in the Slow but dangerous, or the fast but safe quadrant. All I can think of right now is maybe Submarines are slow, but crashes are likely fairly dangerous to the occupants, and fast but safe... I got nothing.

I was thinking initial acceleration and not top speed- in which case fuel cars get their asses kicked.
